Rincón, Puerto Rico

Welcome to Rincón, Puerto Rico

What is Rincón
Rincón is a municipality on the west coast of Puerto Rico, known as “the Town of Beautiful Sunsets.” It has a population of around 15,200 inhabitants. Rincón includes several barrios around the main urban center (Rincón Pueblo), and its territory extends over roughly 37 square kilometers.

Historically, Rincón was founded around 1770, originally as a rural area under the jurisdiction of another municipality. Over time it evolved to become an independent municipality, with its own identity and heritage.

Rincón is widely recognized as the “Capital of Surfing” in Puerto Rico. Its long Atlantic-facing coastline, waves, and surf culture have earned it that reputation.

What makes Rincón special / Its identity

  • Rincón is famous for its breathtaking sunsets — every evening people gather along the coast to watch the sun dip into the sea, painting the sky with brilliant colors.

  • The town combines surf culture, laid-back beach vibes, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that appeals both to locals and visitors.

  • There is variety: from surfing waves to calm spots for snorkeling or relaxing, from nightlife by the beach to tranquil natural settings inland.

  • The town preserves a mix of local Puerto Rican charm and a cosmopolitan vibe thanks to visitors, surfers, and expats — giving it a distinctive blend of lo-cal and global.

Tourist Highlights and Attractions

  • Surfing and beaches: Rincón’s beaches such as Domes Beach (also known as Lighthouse Beach), Tres Palmas Marine Reserve / Steps Beach, and others are renowned worldwide for surf. In winter, waves at Tres Palmas can reach impressive heights, attracting surfers from all over.

  • Snorkeling and marine life: The marine reserve around Steps Beach protects vibrant coral populations and many species of fish and turtles — ideal for snorkeling and underwater exploration in calm seasons.

  • Scenic lighthouse & sunset-spot: The Punta Higüera Lighthouse is a historic structure that offers spectacular views over the ocean, perfect for sunsets and relaxed strolls. Whale watching is relatively common between November and April, when humpback whales pass by and can sometimes be spotted from the lighthouse area.

  • Culture & nightlife: On Thursday evenings the town hosts an “Art Walk” — local artists, galleries and artisan stands fill the central plaza with crafts, music, food and local flavor. The mix of casual beach bars, restaurants, art and music gives Rincón a lively yet relaxed social scene.

  • Natural & scenic variety: Beyond the ocean, Rincón’s geography includes small hills inland, natural water bodies and a mix of landscapes that offer contrast to the surf-and-sand lifestyle.
